Where a divorce document gets checked.

Proof that a marriage has ended is asked for at a few fixed points. These are the ones GOV.UK sets out.

Giving notice to remarry

If you were married or in a civil partnership before, you bring a decree absolute or final order when you give notice at a register office in England and Wales. A divorce granted outside the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man must be proved too, and the register office or the General Register Office charges a fee to check it.

Partner and spouse visas

The Home Office asks for details of anyone you were married to before, with evidence that the marriage ended, giving a divorce certificate as its example. Any document not in English or Welsh needs a certified translation.

Fiancé and proposed civil partner visas

To come to the UK to marry, you must prove that any earlier marriage or civil partnership has ended. When that proof is a court decision in another language, it goes into the application with a certified translation.

What we check on a divorce document.

Divorce papers are court records first and certificates second. These are the points we work through before signing.

  • Which stage the paper records. In England and Wales a conditional order or decree nisi does not end a marriage. Only a final order does, or a decree absolute where the application was issued before 6 April 2022. Foreign stages are named exactly, so an interim ruling never reads as a final one.
  • The date the divorce became final. Many foreign judgments carry a separate note or certificate stating when the decision could no longer be appealed. That note is always translated, as it holds the date a registrar or caseworker looks for.
  • Both spouses' names. Foreign decrees often transliterate names or order them differently. Tell us your passport spelling and the translation follows it, so all your papers agree.
  • Seals, stamps and signatures. Each one is shown where it sits on the page, including any on the back.

Made for the Home Office and the family courts.

Our certified translations are accepted by UK courts, the Home Office, universities, HMRC and banks. Each one carries a signed Statement of Truth and a certification letter with the translator's credentials.

If a UK authority rejects your divorce translation, we revise it free or refund you in full.

Divorce papers, answered.

Do I need the decree nisi or the decree absolute translated?

Usually the decree absolute or final order: the document that actually ends the marriage, and the one the register office lists. If all you hold is the earlier document, check with the office first.

My divorce was granted abroad. What will the register office want?

Proof of the divorce, checked for a fee by the local register office or the General Register Office, plus a translation of any document not in English if either of you is from outside the UK. We translate the judgment and any finality certificate attached to it.

My divorce only appears as a note on my marriage certificate. Can you translate that?

Yes. In some countries a divorce is recorded as a note beside the original marriage entry. The whole certificate is translated, margin note included. Ask the office you are applying to whether that is enough or whether it wants the court decision itself.

I need my English final order in another language. Can you help?

Yes. We translate UK decrees and final orders for use abroad and can arrange notarisation and an FCDO apostille. The Legalisation Office can apostille a UK court document sealed with a wet ink court seal. Allow 2 to 5 extra working days for that step.

Will the translation keep the court's own legal terms?

Yes. Each term is rendered as the court wrote it rather than swapped for the nearest English procedure. The court name, case number and judge are carried over exactly, with the original court name kept beside the English where there is no direct equivalent.

One document, properly certified.
