Where a foreign marriage certificate gets used.

If you married outside the UK, your foreign certificate is still the proof of your marriage, so you send it with a certified translation.

  • Spouse and partner visas. If you apply as a husband, wife or civil partner, you must prove a marriage or civil partnership recognised in the UK. The Home Office lists a marriage certificate as evidence and wants a certified translation of anything not in English or Welsh.
  • Joining your husband or wife. A student's dependant partner, and family members applying under the EU Settlement Scheme, can use a marriage certificate to show the relationship.
  • Divorce in England and Wales. The court asks for your original marriage certificate or a certified copy, with a certified translation if it is not in English.
  • A passport in your married name. HM Passport Office asks for your marriage certificate when you apply in a new surname, double-barrelled ones included.
  • A first passport through your father. Born abroad and applying for a first adult passport with your father's documents? HM Passport Office also asks for the marriage certificate showing when he married your mother.

Ready for the Home Office and the family court.

Our certified translations are accepted by UK courts, the Home Office, universities, HMRC and banks. Here that usually means a partner visa, a new-name passport or a divorce application.

For family visas, the Immigration Rules spell out what the translation itself must contain.

  • A date, and confirmation that it is an accurate translation
  • The full name and signature of the translator, or of an authorised official of the translation company
  • Contact details for the translator or company
  • For extensions and settlement, certification by a qualified translator, with their credentials

Every certified translation from the Lingo Service team is signed and dated, with a certification letter showing the translator's credentials. If a UK authority rejects it, we revise it free or refund you in full.

What we look at on a marriage certificate.

Each entry on a marriage record has to come through exactly.

Both spouses' names

Surnames before and after the marriage are kept as recorded. Names in another script can follow each passport's spelling once you tell us.

Status before the wedding

Many certificates say whether each partner was single, divorced or widowed. Family visa applications ask about earlier marriages, so this entry must be exact.

Ceremony and registration

The wedding date and the registration date can differ, and so can the venue and the registry office. Each is translated as written.

Witnesses and officials

Witnesses, the officiant and the registrar often appear with their signatures. Each name and role is translated.

Religious marriage contracts

A nikah or similar contract may set out the dower and conditions agreed by the couple. Every clause is translated, not summarised.

Seals and endorsements

Registration numbers, seals and any legalisation stamp already on the certificate are shown where they appear, with their wording translated.

Three steps, every page included.

  1. 01

    Upload every page

Add a clear photo or scan of the certificate on the quote form, including the reverse and any continuation pages.

  2. 02

    Know the cost upfront

The instant quote shows the full price before you pay. A longer record, such as a multi-page marriage contract, costs more than a one-page certificate.

  3. 03

    Receive the certified PDF

The signed, dated translation arrives by email. Weekday orders before 12:00 UK time can get a same-day certified PDF.

Questions about marriage records.

We married abroad. Can we get a UK marriage certificate instead?

No. GOV.UK explains that only UK marriages are registered in the UK, so a wedding abroad has no UK certificate. The exception is a consular marriage at a British embassy, consulate or high commission. The UK recognises a foreign marriage if it was lawful where it took place and would be allowed under UK law.

I am extending my spouse visa or applying to settle. Does the translation change?

The Immigration Rules ask for one extra thing at this stage: certification by a qualified translator, with details of the translator's or company's credentials. Our certification letter is signed on behalf of Lingo Service Translations Ltd, an ITI Corporate Member, and carries the company's details.

Which copy do I send with a divorce application?

The court asks for your original marriage certificate or a certified copy. Send us the same version you plan to file, so the translation matches the document the court receives.

Our marriage record runs to several pages. Do they all need translating?

Yes. Registration notes, stamps and endorsements often sit on the back or on extra pages, so upload every page and your quote covers the whole record.

Is a civil partnership certificate handled the same way?

Yes. The Home Office and HM Passport Office list civil partnership certificates alongside marriage certificates, and the translation is certified in exactly the same way.

One certificate, sorted.
